Mrs Liz Kiloh, our science lab technician has been a part of our Cairns school community for 31 years! During this time she has faithfully served the school community by supporting our Science Teachers and preparing for practical lessons. Over the years she has watched her children journey through their schooling years at Freshwater Christian College, and now watches her grandchildren as they learn and grow here.

Mrs Liz Kiloh has been a part of our Cairns school community for 31 years!

Matthew and Jack from our student committee recently caught up with Mrs Kiloh to hear some of her stories and memories.

When did you start working at Freshwater Christian College?

I started here in July 1992 when I moved here from Canberra.

What was the school like when you started here at our Cairns school?

There were only 2 buildings for high school and 2 buildings for primary, the undercover area was where the library is now. My science lab was where the art room is now and the library kept being moved from classroom to class over the years.

How has the science lab changed over the last 30 years?

When I started here the science lab was in D4 (the current Art room) with only a small space for me to set up for pracs in the prep room, there were only 3 benches for the students to work. A few years later 3 more benches were added. Now I have a building with 3 science labs, a bigger prep room and an office for the science teachers.

Do you have any funny stories about working at the school?

I would quite often go on the school camps and on one to Chillago we had our own orange busses back then, we were out in the bush and the bus got stuck in the trees and we had to get off the bus while the driver removed unstuck branches that got caught in the top. Everyone had a good laugh to see two big branches looking like antlers on the top of the bus.

What has made you want to stay at Freshwater for so long?

My four children attended the College, and now, some of my grandchildren are here, one of my granddaughters graduated last year, exactly 20 years after her mum graduated. And I love my job. What other things do you love about our school? This school has been like family to me, I love that it is still has a small school vibe and you get to see students growing in their faith with our Lord Jesus, it is great to see so many staff that have been here a long time and past students working here.
