Care & Wellbeing

At Freshwater Christian College, care and wellbeing begins with relationships. We want every student to feel known, valued and connected, with people around them who notice, listen and provide support when it is needed.

Our smaller College community helps create strong connections between students and staff, both within year levels and across the wider College. Students are known by their teachers, supported by pastoral staff and have regular opportunities to build relationships with students of different ages.

Grounded in our Christian faith, we encourage students to show kindness, compassion and respect for others, following Jesus’ teaching to “treat others as you would like to be treated yourself” (Matthew 7:12).

Pastoral Care and Student Support

Pastoral care is shared across our College community. Our classroom teachers play an important role in knowing and supporting students within each year level, while our wellbeing leaders work alongside them to provide additional support when needed.

Our College wellbeing team includes Mr Aaron Hammill, Deputy Head of Primary (Wellbeing), Mr Caleb DeVries, Deputy Head of Secondary (Wellbeing), and Mrs Hannah John, College Chaplain. Together with our pastoral teachers and wider leadership team, they help support the social, emotional, relational and spiritual wellbeing of students across the College.

We also value strong partnerships with families and aim to work collaboratively with parents and carers when concerns arise.

Character, Resilience and Personal Growth

Alongside academic learning, we want students to develop the character, confidence and skills they need to navigate life well.

Students are encouraged to grow in resilience, responsibility, empathy and wise decision-making, while learning to build healthy relationships, respond positively to challenges and consider the needs of others.

Our Christian values provide an important foundation for this growth, encouraging students to develop their character and faith while discovering how they can contribute positively to their school and wider community.

Positive Behaviour and Restorative Relationships

Our approach to behaviour is relational and restorative, with clear expectations designed to help students grow in responsibility, character and respect for others.

We seek to respond to behaviour in ways that help students understand the impact of their choices, take responsibility and, where relationships have been affected, work towards restoration.

Our College virtues and expectations are taught proactively, with additional support provided when students need greater guidance.

Families can view our Positive Behaviour Management Policy here.

Connection and Belonging

A strong sense of belonging is an important part of wellbeing at Freshwater. As a Kindy to Year 12 College, students have many opportunities to connect across year levels through chapel, sport, music, performing arts, leadership, mentoring, buddy activities and everyday College life.

These relationships help younger students feel connected to the wider College community, while giving older students opportunities to encourage, mentor and lead others.

Our smaller size also means students and staff often know one another beyond their immediate classroom or year level, helping create the warm, connected community that is central to life at Freshwater.

Seeking Support

Families who have concerns about the wellbeing of a current student are encouraged to contact the College so that we can work together to provide appropriate support.
