Learning at Freshwater Christian College is distinguished by the wide range of co-curricular programs and opportunities available to all students. At every stage of their development, our students participate in activities outside the classroom environment spanning across a range of subject areas.

These programs are important in strengthening skills and understanding in areas such as; leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and resilience building.

Our extra-curricular and co-curricular programs provide students with opportunities beyond the classroom to thrive and flourish in developing their unique gifts and talents.

Sports at Freshwater Christian College

Inter-house sports

We have three sports houses at Freshwater Christian College; Douglas Barras, Frangos Sharks and Fuller Crocs. Our Inter-house Carnivals are full of fun, where all students are encouraged to get involved. Carnivals include – Swimming Carnival, Cross Country and Athletics Carnival.

Secondary students also have the opportunity to engage in friendly, lunchtime, inter-house competitions and staff vs student competitions, across a range of sports throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for the school community to come together for some fun, fitness and team spirit.

Inter-school sports

Students have the opportunity to represent the College in Inter-School Sporting Competitions, including JSS (junior secondary) and CISSA (senior secondary), where they compete against schools from across the Far North in chosen sports.

Students are invited to participate in after school sports training in preparation for Inter-School sports competitions in selected sports. 

Swimming

Swimming is a big part of life in tropical North Queensland and swim-safety is critical to ensuring our children are confident in and around the water. Primary students have an opportunity to engage in a learn-to-swim program each year.

The program will culminate for students from Years 4 – 12 with a Swimming Carnival. The Junior Primary students will also enjoy the very popular ‘Splashorama’ Day, a special water play party to celebrate the end of their swim program.

Athletics

All Senior Primary – Secondary students are encouraged to support their house team through participation in a range of track and field events at the Freshwater Inter-House Athletics Carnival. Athletics pathways can lead to TCN, Peninsula, State and National level events based on qualifications.

Our Kindy and Junior Primary students are given the opportunity to develop their athletic skills in a fun Inter-House Carnival, including a range of track, field and obstacle based events.

Cross Country

All students are encouraged to support their house team through participation in our whole school Inter-House Cross Country Carnival and Fun Colour Run.

Cross Country pathways can lead to TCN, Peninsula, State and National level events based on qualifications. In preparation for the Freshwater Cross Country Carnival, students are given the opportunity to attend before school training sessions in Term One.

TCN, Peninsula & State Sports

Freshwater Christian College students are invited to tryout for Trinity Coast North (TCN) sports teams each year. The TCN trials are the first step on the school pathway for representative sport for Peninsula teams and beyond.

Perceptual Motor Program

Our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) supports younger students to enhance their hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, fitness, balance, locomotion and eye-tracking skills. With the support of our Grade 6 student leaders, students from Kindy to Grade 2 engage in our weekly PMP sessions throughout the year. 

Futsal

Students are invited to join a Freshwater Falcons Futsal Team in the summer and winter seasons at Redlynch Futsal Stadium.

We have many teams across Primary and Secondary age groups, who compete in the girls, boys or mixed comps. In addition to their weekly game, teams train after school in our College stadium. Game fees are subsidised by the College.

 

Primary and Secondary students also have the opportunity to represent the College in the FNQ Titles, where they compete against schools from across the Far North.

Personal Growth Program

The Personal Growth Program (PGP) is a non-assessed program which allows students from Years 3 – 11 an opportunity to pursue interests in a range of areas. Students have the opportunity to work with students from other year levels to develop their faith, work collaboratively and grow in their leadership skills.

Opportunities range from sports, such as netball, golf, rafting, skating, swimming, soccer and basketball, to outdoor skills, sewing, cooking, robotics, art, drama, chess and dance.

Music

Junior Primary Choir

Our Year 2 students all have an extra period of music per week to participate in our Junior Primary Choir. Students learn to sing in group, both in unison and simple part singing. Rehearsals are conducted weekly during school hours. Students have the opportunity to perform at school events throughout the year.

Senior Primary Choir

Students in Years 3 – 6 are eligible to join our award winning, Senior Primary Choir. Rehearsals are conducted weekly during school hours. Performance and showcasing opportunities include ANZAC Day, school open days, end of year events and the Cairns Eisteddfod, where our Choir has been awarded first place overall for 2 years running.

Secondary Choir

Our Secondary Music Choir is designed for junior secondary students who love to sing, offering a fun and engaging experience without the need for auditions. Students have the opportunity to sing a wide range of music, including spirituals, pop, folk and jazz.

Woodwind Ensemble

Primary and Secondary woodwind players may join the FCC Woodwind Ensemble. Performance opportunities include school assemblies, Cairns Eisteddfod and end of year events. 

Senior Secondary Chapel Band

Our Senior Chapel Band is open to students in Years 10 – 12. These musicians lead our school community in weekly praise and worship. With regular rehearsals, this group focuses on learning Christian contemporary praise and worship music, providing opportunities for vocalists and musicians playing guitar, drums, keys and bass.

Private Music Tuition

Weekly private music tuition is available with our visiting music tutors including both instrumental and vocal. A range of instruments are available for student use for a small contribution towards maintenance.

Additional Opportunities For Students

Freshwater Christian College provides students with plenty of extra opportunities to enrich their learning journey. From Robotics club to Maths and Choir, there’s something for everyone to explore their interests and grow. These activities help students build new skills and make meaningful connections with their peers.

Robotics Club

Robotics Club is held during lunchtime for students to learn and grow in confidence in the area of robotics. Our Robotics Team regularly participates in regional competitions.

The Opti-MINDS Challenge

Opti-MINDS enables students who have a passion for problem-solving and critical thinking to showcase their skills and talents. Opti-MINDS is an inclusive team challenge that empowers participants to think, create and communicate. Freshwater Christian College participates in Opti-MINDS team competitions in the areas of language literature, science engineering and social sciences.

Our Opti-MINDS teams have celebrated many successes over recent years with teams travelling to Brisbane to compete in State competitions most years.

Chess Club

Primary students have an opportunity to participate in a lunchtime chess club and training program through ChessKids. This is an opportunity to prepare for regional tournaments, with potential pathways leading to State representation.

 

Mathematics

Maths Enrichment Program

Year 7 – 10 students demonstrating extended mathematical understanding will be invited to join the Maths Enrichment Program to challenge and extend their learning in this area. Resources are developed by the Australian Mathematics Trust and involve tutorial lessons, practice questions and individual challenge questions. This program involves after school tutorial sessions, as well as being integrated into students’ weekly Mathematics program.

Maths Competitions and Challenges

Our Mathematics department offers a variety of competitions and challenges throughout the year aimed at supporting and challenging our young learners. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Outdoor Learning Program

Bush Kindy

Our Kindergarten students are provided with a twice weekly opportunity, during Terms 2 and 3, to learn in nature, through play and exploration by the creek on our 40 acre property.

Primary Nature Learning Program

Primary students are provided with opportunities to learn in nature, through play and interaction with their natural environment. Curriculum elements are connected to this learning time and it provides students with many benefits that are not possible within a classroom setting.

The Great Wheelbarrow Race

The Great Wheelbarrow Race is held every May and is run over three days in a relay format. Each year, a group of Year 12 students participate in training sessions and then compete in the race from Mareeba to Chillagoe, covering 140km. This is a fundraising event, with our team supporting the Three Angels in Nepal.

Camping Program

Freshwater Christian College offers an extensive outdoor education camping program to support students in their spiritual growth, while engaging with their natural environment and trying a range of new activities. Through their camping experiences, students are supported in building positive relationships with their peers, developing their teamwork skills and growing their resilience. 

Our camping program involves students from Years 4 – 12 and includes a range of locations such as; Fitzroy Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Lake Tinaroo, Echo Creek and the Daintree Rainforest Observatory. 

International Trips

Our Japan Trip is available to students who study Japanese at the College and is a great experience of immersion into Japanese culture.

The trip is offered every second year, allowing students the opportunity to use their studied language, engage in cultural activities, visit significant sights and experience everyday Japanese life, including a Japanese school immersion program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

International Trips

Every year students from grade six and upwards are given the chance to explore the world and join one of our College International Trips. 

Our Nepal Missions Trip is a once in a lifetime journey to Nepal to visit the Three Angels School. Students spend time with the students and help complete a few projects in and around the facility.

The Japan Trip is available to students who study Japanese at the College and is a great experience of immersion into the Japanese culture. The group travel to Japan every second year and spend time visiting popular destinations and schools to experience real life in Japan.
