Beyond the Classroom

Learning at Freshwater Christian College is distinguished by the wide range of co-curricular programs and opportunities available to all students. At every stage of their development, our students participate in activities outside the classroom environment spanning across all subject areas. These programs are important in strengthening skills and understanding in areas such as leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and resilience building. Our extensive extracurricular programs provide students with opportunities beyond the classroom to thrive and flourish in developing their unique gifts and talents.

Sports

Inter-House Sports

We have three sports teams at Freshwater Christian College, Douglas Barras, Frangos Sharks & Fuller Crocs. Our Inter-house Carnivals are full of fun where all students are encouraged to get involved. Carnivals include – Swimming Carnival, Cross Country and Athletics Carnival.

Swimming

Swimming is a big part of life in tropical North Queensland and swim-safety is critical to ensuring our children are confident in and around the water. Each year level from Kindergarten to Year 12 have an opportunity to learn swimming every year. The program will culminate for students from Years 4 – 12 with a swimming carnival. The Junior Primary students will also enjoy the very popular ‘Splashorama’ Day, a special water play party to celebrate the end of their swim program.

Athletics

Our Sports Department has a passion to equip our students with the skills they need to pursue every opportunity available in the field of sports. Throughout the year our Sports Teachers offer training sessions after school to prepare students for District and Regional Carnivals for both Cross Country and Track and Field.

TCN, Peninsula & State Sports

All students have the opportunity to train for and attend district level (TCN) sports. Opportunities exist in the area of Australian Football, baseball, basketball and aquathlon.

Personal Growth Program (PGP)

The Personal Growth Program is a non-assessed program which allows students to pursue interests in a range of areas. Students have the opportunity to work with students from a range of year levels to develop their faith, work collaboratively and grow in their own leadership skills. Opportunities range from sports such as netballs, fitness, athletics, cricket to robotics, art, drama, chess and Christian study.

Freshwater Falcons Club Sport

There are a variety of options to get involved in Club sports at Freshwater Christian College. Popular options are futsal, basketball and rugby.

Robotics Club

Robotics Club is held during lunchtime for students to learn and grow in confidence in the area of robotics. Our Robotics Team regularly participates in regional competitions and have experienced some great victories.

The Opti-MINDS Challenge

Opti-MINDS enables students who have a passion for problem-solving and critical thinking to showcase their skills and talents. Opti-MINDS is an inclusive team challenge that empowers participants to think, create and communicate. Freshwater Christian College participates in Opti-MINDS team competitions in the area of language literature, science engineering and social sciences.

Our Opti-MINDS teams have celebrated many successes over recent years with teams travelling to Brisbane to compete in State competitions most years.

Debating

Our Debating Team gives our secondary students the opportunity to build confidence in the area of public speaking, researching and gives them the ability to express and summarise ideas eloquently.

Chess and Chess Club

Studies have shown a strong correlation between playing chess and a higher improvement in maths results and at Freshwater Christian College chess is included in our primary maths program. Students also have the opportunity to join our Chess Club run at lunchtime. 

Our College has created a pathway in collaboration with the Sydney Academy of Chess enabling our Chess Team to learn, develop, and compete at high levels.

Performing Arts

Our Performing Arts Department at Freshwater Christian College is a vibrant and action-packed part of our community. With regular performances scheduled throughout the year from Shakespeare to clowning, there is a wide variety of opportunities to get involved and have fun. Freshwater Christian College is also well known for our musicals run every second year.

Music Tuition

Tuition is available for all students at Freshwater Christian College in a wide variety of instruments as well as singing at an additonal cost.

Camps & Excursions

Students in years 4 – 12 all attend a mid-year camp, these camps give students the opportunity to build stronger relationships, expand their leadership skills and build other important skills such as critical thinking and resilience. The camp locations vary from Fitzroy Island on the  Great Barrier Reef to Emu Gully in Toowoomba.

International Trips

Every year students from Grade six and upwards are given the chance to explore the world and join one of our College International Trips. 

Our Nepal Missions Trip is a once in a lifetime journey to Nepal to visit the Three Angels School. Students spend time with the students and help complete a few projects in and around the facility.

The Japan Trip is available to students who study Japanese at the College and is a great experience of immersion into the Japanese culture. The group travel to Japan every second year and spend time visiting popular destinations and schools to experience real life in Japan.

International Trips
