Freshwater Christian College is a K-12 school providing quality education in Cairns, North Queensland.

The world of robotics and game development offers new and exciting career pathways for our children. At Freshwater Christian College students get the opportunity to explore these career pathways in fun and explorative ways at our Hector Costello Innovations Centre. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics, otherwise known as ‘STEM’ subjects are in high demand and at Freshwater Christian College we make it a high priority to deliver opportunities to learn, grow and develop confidence in these skill sets.

STEM Successes!

Well done Year 7and 8 students for working so hard over the past 13 weeks. It was great to see the Year 7 students make so many different games using arcade.makecode.com. This website offers a great platform to learn and develop skills in game development. The Year 8 students have also been busy creating “SUMOBOTS”. These robots made out of Lego EV3 Mindstorm robotics kits used different sensors (ultrasonic sensor: measuring distance, colour sensor: measuring the amount of reflected light) in order to stay within the designated area and then seek the opponent and push them out of the area. This challenge culminated in a final “battle” with Esther-Grace and Giselle being the Lego EV3 Mindstorm final construction and coding champions for this rotation. I look forward to seeing what the next rotation of Year 7 and 8 students will develop in the coming months.

Starting in week 6 students from Year 3-12 are invited to build and code EV3 Robots in preparation for a QSITE Robotics challenge that will be held at the end of this term. Students will have the opportunity to build either a  Rescue-mission Bot” or a “Dance-Bot”
